Question: What do you get when you cross a boring pair of foam wedges, acrylics, and a few hours of your time?
Answer: You get my response to the VAFF creative shoes challenge!
I started this project with a pair of Groove wedges that I purchased at Ross for $9.99
Groove Wedges: Found on sale at Ross for $9.99
To begin the project I masked the Groove tag with a bit of blue, low-tack tape. I could have cut it off, I guess. I simply chose to preserve it and not run the risk of cutting into the webbed upper or spoiling any of the seams.
Using regular acrylic paint, I painted the outside and edges of the webbed upper a deep fuschia, my fave color of choice for this spring and summer season. I left the inside natural so it would retain its softness.
Once the uppers were dry, I painted the base of the shoes white. This helped to seal the foam and aided in preventing a color-shift in the final design. I dried the white base coat with a blow dryer and dry brushed unbleached titanium for texture and to relieve some of the absolute whiteness.
Once the texture was dry I sketched the hibiscus and leaf details, painted them as shown, and now they're ready to rock.

These are absolutely fabulous. It's time for you to start selling these so we can buy them!
1sgdish! That's a fantastic compliment! Thank you so much. Please feel free to message me if you're interested in having a pair designed just for you.
2LOVE THESE!! You rocked this challenge girl! So regular acrylic paint worked? I am having trouble using my markers on these new shoes I got. I actually think they are the same ones you used in your last project (the ones from American Eagle, Payless). The pens are not taking to well to the material used on the wedge. I may be taking a trip to the art store to get some paints. Anyways, killer job!
Woo hoo!
3Is it possible you have outdone yourself? Those are magnificent! The colors, the hibiscus, the details!! Something for my daughter and her visiting cousin to do for the summer! Yay! Just beautiful. (Keep the avatar).
4Hey Margs! Thanks so much. You have to degrade the plastic on the shoes from Payless to open up the pores of the material. Use 120 grit sandpaper with a rather light hand and you shouldn't have any more issues. It worked for me and mine are holding colorfast.
Robinesque: Thanks to you too! I'm really loving these shoes and I'm very proud of how they came out. Your daughter and her cousin should have no problem with them. It was really only a few hours work.
5This pair totally rocks!!!!! You really have talent!!
6They came out so great. Those flowers are beautiful!
7Thanks so much, Ladies. I can't wait to wear them. We've been so involved in our patio project that we even missed the MayFair Festival. Oh... Well.

11Thanks so much, pure_perfection! I just picked up a sweet pair of board shorts last night. Now I have two outfits to rock these wedges. I am seriously into these shoes and I love that others are liking them too.
